Born in Silvanost to the
Noble Family, Loftus. The Loftus Family was rich but thin in numbers.
The had a reputation for profiting from gems and meddling in affairs
above their station. Baru was the youngest of three brothers. At an early
age he was admitted into the House of Mystics and found himself quite
at home. From the onset he had a distaste for the rigid curriculum and
would often protest against a class by simply ignoring it outright. He
excelled at the study of most spheres of magic, but took exceptional
interest in the evocation sphere. This school was widely considered a
crude discipline beneath the dignity of the highest elves. Baru saw
power in the sphere and disregarded the criticisms from his classmates
and teachers. When he wasn't focusing on evocation he would be reading
about Dragons and their histories. This went beyond breaking decorum. It
was considered a high offense to unearth legends of the ancient evils
that were sealed away by the elves. So he worked almost entirely in
secret until he was finally discovered.
Normally a student caught
researching a forbidden topic would face immediate expulsion or possibly
have his connection to magic and arcana forcefully severed. But Baru's
family pulled together their political will to have him placed on a
'Independent study of indeterminate length'. Baru's oldest brother Vyce
informed Baru of his fate in advance. Enraged at their ignorance and not
wanting to give them the satisfaction of watching him dismissed he
stole into an artifact vault and took the first gate stone he could
find.
Leaving the school he headed
straight to his family's home, and found one of his family's household
guards, a frost minotaur named Glidden. He knew Glidden to be very
effective in a fight, but more importantly interested in profit. Baru
then went to his family, said his goodbyes, and activated the gate
stone. The stone dissolved as it was activated, and a portal opened into
a mountain vale with the beginnings of a small town just on the
horizon. The vault he had stole the stone from, was not particularly
well guarded so he assumed the location would be somewhere inside of
Krynn.
Unfortunately the gate took him to Faerun. Now he and Glidden were left to find their way home in a strange new land...
